Talk: Humane Behaviour in Time of War

Tuesday, 21 May, 2013 - 20:00

Speakers: Annette Bygott and Mike Lyons

GERMAN DESERTERS DURING WORLD WAR II

- we will remember them

Germans who had refused to fight Hitler’s war did not feature in the post-war public debate at home or abroad and their stories did not catch the attention of historians until recently. Annette Bygott of Oxford has just finished translating a book which records over 20,000 deserters and war resisters who paid the ultimate price at the hands of the Nazis’ war judges and executioners.

IN MITIGATION OF THE HORRORS OF WAR

- a talk with illustrative artefacts

Mike Lyons, a long-standing member of Abingdon Peace Group and active member of the peace movement, will examine a number of episodes from the Second World War, in which the spirit of humanity triumphs, despite – and not because of – the context of nations at war.

Abingdon Peace Group meets on the third Tuesday of each month except August. These free meetings take place at 8 pm at the Northcourt Centre, Northcourt Road, Abingdon, OX14 1NS. All who are interested in peace and campaigning for it are welcome to attend. The Group has no party political affiliations.
